GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY:

“Laban and Bethuel answered, ‘This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.’” (Genesis 24.50-51)

REFLECTION ON GOD’S WORD:

Jehovah Jireh, “the Lord provides” or “the Lord will provide.” What does it truly mean to trust in the Lord except to acknowledge that in spite of all we know of the world and our life in it, all that we do and to earn our place in it and our way through it, without the Lord’s provision our efforts amount to little more than shifting sand through the hourglass. Without the Lord’s provision, we are “dust to dust” and “ashes to ashes.” We are passing moments and fading memories. What we truly desire is to be eternal and without end. It is not that we fear death as much as we fear nothingness. Remember, mighty ones of God, we were created out of nothing. We were random elements of the vastness of space without meaning, purpose and life. Before God breathed His Word into the void, the devoid if you will, we had no possibility of existence. The truth is “God had something in mind and it was US!” God provided the means and the opportunity for us to exist. Without His provision, we are simply “matter that doesn’t matter.”

This is the essence of the story which brings Isaac his wife, Rebekah. It is another chapter in our discipleship to embrace the ultimate truth “God provides,” or Jehovah Jireh. It stands against what the world under the influence of the Accuser, Satan, promotes. He spins the tale of accidents and coincidences. He weaves the tapestry of “by your own strength, ingenuity and determination you provide for yourself alone.” Satan has to oppose the very idea of Almighty God. He has to because confessing that God is more than everything else means that he is less. There is no equal. It is a battle of wills and won’ts. The world allows the idea of “god” so that our ego can attain a height it was never created for nor meant to be. This is why Jesus taught in the scope of righteousness humility is key. We hear the antitheses of “If one desires to be the greatest, he must become the servant of all,” “the least of these,” and “love one another by loving God first.” So it comes to us in chapter 24, that Abraham’s servant is the main character of the story. In his obedience to his masters, Abraham and God, Isaac will be provided. Mighty ones of God, let us explore the elements of this story and find that same truth for ourselves in the days to come.

TODAYS’ PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING:

Father, in these days we are finding the need to believe even more than ever before. We all have known trouble, some in greater ways than others, but You are offering us the assurance that we will not be consumed by it forever. Regardless of the “time” we are in and the “time” we have been given, we ask for Your Holy Spirit which Jesus asked You to share with us, to lead and guide and direct us in the paths we should go. Teach us what we still need to learn. Empower us to put that learning into action. Bless our actions not as a works righteousness endeavor, but as righteous works of faith, hope and love in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
