GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY:
“Then the servant prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.‘” (Genesis 24.12-14)
REFLECTION ON GOD’S WORD:
Purity of promise and faithfulness to the cause of God. We are called to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. This the chief servant of Abraham was bound to do even when the task seemed impossible or improbable. God had a plan in mind and had already set in motion how it would be completed.
Chosenness! Sanctified! Abraham’s decision was not a command from God that is recorded but a matter of personal faith and belief stemming from the worship of the One God who truly spoke to him. Abraham understood that legacy was now determined by faith and obedience if there was to be any real blessing. It wasn’t simply doing good and right things that built a future which honored God. It was about doing good in the right way and for the right reason. It was about doing the right thing in a “good” way. This next step for Isaac would prove to be a confirmation of what he believed and knew as he led Isaac to be sacrificed to the God of his salvation. He told Isaac then, “Jehovah Jireh, God will provide.” He told his servant the very same thing when the plan was laid out on how Isaac would be provided a wife from among his own people. She would be a wife of compassion, faith and obedience. God would provide and lead him to her so that he could lead her back to Isaac. And so his servant believed as well and trusted in the word of his master who was servant to the Lord their God. Neither of them would be disappointed.
Mighty ones of God, so should it be for us as well as we make our decisions for who we are and who we shall belong to. We must walk by faith to guide our sight. We should see with our heart and soul so that our mind captures the vision which God reveals to us on how we shall live and how we shall serve and how we shall love one another. We must trust that God will provide and that He is already providing a blessing to which He alone can lead us to find. He hears our prayers. He knows our needs. He desires for what we want that is true and righteous altogether to be ours. For God is love and His love endures forever. We should not dare to consider less than the chosenness of God’s favor and His will to sanctify and set apart that which is not simply good and serves His purpose but is the best. Let us be as Abraham’s servant and “trust in our lord as we trust in the Lord” who is righteous and holy.
TODAYS’ PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING:
Father, in these days we are finding the need to believe even more than ever before. We all have known trouble, some in greater ways than others, but You are offering us the assurance that we will not be consumed by it forever. Regardless of the “time” we are in and the “time” we have been given, we ask for Your Holy Spirit which Jesus asked You to share with us, to lead and guide and direct us in the paths we should go. Teach us what we still need to learn. Empower us to put that learning into action. Bless our actions not as a works righteousness endeavor, but as righteous works of faith, hope and love in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
