GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY:
“Laban and Bethuel answered, ‘This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.‘” (Genesis 24.50-51)
REFLECTION ON GOD’S WORD:
Are we willing to believe in God so much that coincidence does not even enter the conversation? How easy it would have been for Laban and Bethuel to respond to Abraham’s servant, “What further proof do you have that Rebekah is God’s choice for Isaac and that this meeting was not simply a coincidence, an accidental contact?” Yet, they were so grounded in faith and in the word of the servant concerning his master’s wishes, Abraham’s desire for Isaac to honor God, there was no option available to them but to comply. They were not giving in to what the servant said. They were responding to the work of God expressed in the faithful fervency and belief of the servant. Bearing the mark of Abraham as his servant, most likely his ear was pierced bearing an ornamentation representing Abraham himself, it would have been difficult for them to deny their kinsman request. I am sure that his reputation had made its way back to Haran being carried along the trade route which navigated the Fertile Crescent from Canaan to Babylon. They saw the rings and bracelets of great worth. All of that would have been enticing to release Rebekah into Abraham’s care to become Isaac’s wife. In spite of all that, what was the most convincing was the testimony of the servant who had prayed to the One God a specific prayer and it was answered with specificity. To doubters this would be coincidence. To the faithful, it was the will of God which could not be argued against.
Mighty ones of God, how faithful are we to walk through the world letting faith be our guide? Are we so committed to do our Master’s bidding, that of Jesus Christ, that we would enter into the mission believing God would deliver? Regardless of what the circumstance or the condition, would we be content for God’s will to be done. The Apostle Paul wrote this to the Philippian church, “In whatever condition I am in and under whatever circumstance, I have learned to be content.” (Philippians 4.11) Such contentment was not a dismissal of feelings and anxieties, fears and doubts, threats and accusations, trials and tribulations. It was not a resignation to “what will be will be.” Such contentment was the deep trust and belief that God was in control and watching over you. It was the satisfaction of walking with God and knowing that when the mission was said and done, “all would be well.” Yes, trusting in God in such faithfulness does not mean there will be no hardship, sacrifice, questions and confrontations. Such trust and contentment does mean that we are not alone in that or any moment. It is the reality which Jesus expressed in the Garden of Gethsemane as He prayed before Judas Kerioth would lead the Roman and Temple guards to arrest Him. He knew that arrest would lead to a trial. That trial would lead to His sentencing as a criminal against God and Rome. That sentencing would be His execution by crucifixion as the cruelest and vilest of punishments. That crucifixion would lead to His resurrection. “God’s will be done” was not simply viewing the journey in its great tragedy and injustice and seeing all that was wrong and injurous. “God’s will be done” was the path of righteousness by which all people could be saved, redeemed forever by the blood of the Lamb of God who came to take away the penalty of sin which was separation from the loving presence of Almighty God. It is no coincidence that this was the journey of Christ. He prayed and believed His Master’s will would be done; especially since His Master was God. And so, too, is ours. Let others see our faith and belief in doing God’s will so they will believe and have nothing left to say but “So be it. Amen.”
TODAYS’ PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING:
Father, in these days we are finding the need to believe even more than ever before. We all have known trouble, some in greater ways than others, but You are offering us the assurance that we will not be consumed by it forever. Regardless of the “time” we are in and the “time” we have been given, we ask for Your Holy Spirit which Jesus asked You to share with us, to lead and guide and direct us in the paths we should go. Teach us what we still need to learn. Empower us to put that learning into action. Bless our actions not as a works righteousness endeavor, but as righteous works of faith, hope and love in Jesus’ name. AMEN.
